42nd Street Car Crash Injures Several Pedestrians
A recent auto accident on 42nd Street near Times Square left at least eight pedestrians injured and three with critical injuries requiring stays in hospital intensive-care units, according to an article in The Washington Post.
Witnesses said that the Manhattan auto accident was triggered when a vehicle sitting at the intersection of 42nd Street and 6th Avenue was rear-ended by a Jaguar traveling at a high rate of speed. The Jaguar bounced off the back of the rear-ended car, hit a nearby taxi, and then tipped onto its side onto the sidewalk, crushing several newspaper distribution boxes and injuring several pedestrians. The Jaguar finally came to rest against a tree near where it turned onto the sidewalk.
Overall, about 12 people were injured in the crash, including passengers in the various vehicles and pedestrians in the area where the Jaguar tipped onto the sidewalk. Three of those injured are in critical condition at local hospitals, and another three are listed in serious condition. Two more people hospitalized for their injuries are expected to be released soon and to make a complete recovery.

In New York, as in any city, some drivers travel the roads at a speed significantly slower than the posted speed limit. While this is not generally considered a violation of the law as long as it does not pose a safety hazard, it does frustrate many other drivers who want to travel faster. In Staten Island and neighboring areas, the response to being stuck behind a slow motorist is often to tailgate, blow one’s horn, and look for the first chance to swerve around the dawdling driver.
